The high Lord was definitely the best book in The Black Magician trilogy. It had more depth, more action, and more romance. I might have given this 5 stars if what happens at the end wouldn't have happened. Akkarin's death. WHY!!! Killing off the most interesting character in the trilogy and the main love interest was just mean to the readers. There was no reason for it. It just wasn't cool. One thing I must point out is that I am really impressed that Canavan was able to get me to love a character that I was kind of indifferent to in book one and disliked in book two. Akkarin seemed pretty cold in the previous books, but the author was able to turn him into a warm, interesting and complex character in the last book, and the main love interest which I was not expecting, so again I ask why kill him off!? I could keep ranting for my whole review, but it won't change anything so I will stop. That just completely took the wind out of my sails and I am hesitant to read anything else by this author because of it, which is a shame because Canavan has something in common with one of my favorite fantasy authors, Michael Sullivan, and that is her books are fun and easy to read while still having depth to them.
More cover rant here. I cannot figure out how this cover fits into the story at all.
