The Slow Regard of Silent Things: A Kingkiller Chronicle Novella

The Slow Regard of Silent Things: A Kingkiller Chronicle Novella - Patrick Rothfuss Pat Rothfuss was worried that readers wouldn't like The Slow Regard of Silent Things because it's different. In the author's forward he even warns you that you might not want to buy it. This is in fact a different sort of book and possibly even strange, but I found it quite enjoyable. He mentions in the author's end note that it doesn't do the things a story is supposed to do. There is no dialog, action, or conflict, and it only has one character, but to me Auri's inner thoughts work well enough so no dialog is needed. Her almost drowning, making soap, traveling through the underworld, interacting with her surroundings, those all work well enough to be action to me. And the many, many rooms and objects that she interacts with have a personality of their own, well enough to work as other characters for me. I loved that I got to learn more about Auri. There were clues to who she once was and possibly some things that may have happened in her life, but more importantly her magical power. Auri is most certainly not quite right compared to other people. Auri is sort of OCD about a lot of things, except the objects seem to speak to her. Not in words per say, but they do. I also enjoyed the illustrations. This was a charmingly strange little story and I am happy that I was able to read it.
